The National Policy Agency (NPA) of the Ministry of the Interior has dispatched the First Corps of Special Police to reinforce the Aviation Police Bureau in conjunction with the Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan and other epidemic control agencies to intensify the inspection against possible infection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in response to the call of Premier Su of the Executive Yuan in intensifying epidemic control at a higher level. Accordingly, all hand baggage of incoming passengers from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau are subject to security checks to prevent the inflow of pork products by passengers against the new rule and which may also spread the epidemic. The first tier of police support consists of 110 police officers which reported to duty on January 18 at 8 a.m. All hand baggage of visitors from high risk regions were thoroughly checked with the help of X-ray machines, sniffer dogs, and inspectors.
Director-General Chen, Ja-Chin of the NPA arrived at Taoyuan International Airport to support the cause on the afternoon of the 18th during the security check. He expressed his sympathy for the police officers for their hard work and gave them encouragement. He mentioned that the Ministry of the Interior has procured new X-ray equipment for introducing more security inspection traffic flows, and will appoint 110 police officers who have been licensed with X-ray machine operator certificates from police departments in Taipei City, New Taipei, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, and Hsinchu Country to support airport security inspection for full-range prevention of pork products brought in by incoming passengers.According to the NPA, each incoming passenger will spend no more than 5 to 10 minutes for a security inspection, and the process will not be likely to cause inconvenience to them. The NPA hopes the visitors could understand the situation and support the government in the control of this epidemic by opening the luggage voluntarily for inspection. This will help to speed up the process and protect the health of the people and safety of Taiwan.
