Phishing emails posing as Momo e-invoice prize notices circulate in Taiwan
-
Taiwanese authorities have warned the public about phishing emails falsely claiming recipients have won prizes through e-commerce platform Momo’s cloud-based e-invoice system, Business Today reported Wednesday.
The scam emails are designed to appear as if they were sent by Momo and state the notification was automatically generated. Recipients are instructed to click a link to verify membership details, credit card status, or other personal information.
The links redirect users to fraudulent websites disguised as government platforms. After users enter basic information, the fake websites display a warning claiming there is an issue with credit card registration and then request full card numbers and security codes, according to NowNews.
Momo confirmed in late January that scammers had been impersonating the platform by sending emails directing users to fake webpages. The company said its invoice prize notifications never require customers to submit personal or financial details through email links.
Shoppers are advised to verify prize information through Momo’s website or app, or via customer service channels.
The Ministry of Finance urged the public to remain cautious when receiving invoice-related emails and to avoid entering personal or financial information through embedded links. It noted that government websites and email addresses use the “.gov.tw” domain and advised people to confirm invoice information through the ministry’s official platform or emails sent from the authorized address “einvoice@einvoice.nat.gov.tw.”
Authorities said fake prize notifications using e-commerce platforms are a common scam tactic. The public is encouraged to avoid clicking unfamiliar links, downloading attachments, or sharing sensitive information, and to contact customer service or Taiwan’s 165 anti-fraud hotline if fraud is suspected.
